The future of equine 'bodywork'

Our Mission

Equine Hanna Somatics® Education is an enterprise redefining what’s possible for horses and riders.

The Nervous System is the composer behind every animal activity or achievement, and movement is nature's language.

Our mission is to provide proven and effective somatic education to every horse (and horse-loving human) on the planet, so they can be their best and most pain-free selves — from cognitive clarity, to athletic performance and recovery, to soundness, injury prevention and beyond.

Empathy, Ethics and Excellence are built into every step of our program.

Standard of Excellence

Equine Hanna Somatics® (EHS) is an emerging field based on proven neuroscience and the tendency of all animals to PANDICULATE, with applications in the fields of horse and rider training, equine professional education, & complimentary or alternative therapies.

As with all established professions, we have a Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics to articulate exemplary behavior to abide by.

We are equally heart-mind-led by a team with deep industry expertise. We continue to develop our research library and incorporate new scientific discoveries into our somatic worldview to stay at the cutting edge of soundness and performance enhancement.

Neuroscience Basis

Hanna Somatics is a proven method for reawakening the mind's control of movement, flexibility, and health.

By identifying the adaptive stress-responses of the nervous system and how they present when they become habituated into 'posture' - we can help animals (including humans) reset their learned myofascial tension back to normal neutral levels without using invasive procedures, manual therapy or traditional 'bodywork.'

Instead we use the innovative technique called Voluntary Pandiculation to guide our clients through our intrinsically mediated somatic exercises.

There is a spark inside you that wants to create an impact, shake-up our industry, and satisfy your horse-loving soul by doing something you REALLY believe in...

...and we want to fan that flame with a neurophysiology textbook and a stack of peer-reviewed studies!

You are not designed to be in pain, and neither are horses!

We were never meant to do this equestrian, business, or farm-life-thing in such a high-stress environment, or alone. Somehow we got it in our heads that shouldering the weight of EVERYTHING, including our horses bodies, shows how strong we were.

We came to believe that we NEEDED to be the leader or expert for our horses, and to keep pushing to realize our dreams. But true strength isn’t proving you can handle everything by yourself; it’s recognizing that there is power in doing less, and letting the horse do the work.

We are...

A vibrant community of passionate, driven horse-lovers who believe self-regulation, pain-free movement and equestrian life can thrive together. Founded over 30 years ago by Eleanor Criswell -

Equine Hanna Somatics isn't just a modality - it's a movement reshaping how the horse industry views working WITH the nervous system, honoring equine potential, and self-care.

  • We are horse-owners who want to play an active role in our horses health and well-being.

  • We are bodyworkers who got tired of maintaining horses who couldn't survive without us and found a way to empower them to truly heal.

  • We are veterinariany doctors, nurses and technicians who aren't satisfied with treating the 'symptoms of aging' or forcing animals to accept care when we can invite them to participate willingly (and found it works much better)!

  • We are horse-geeks and neuroscience nerds who read studies by night with hay in our hair.

  • We are riding instructors who just couldn't give the same lesson one more time without seeing our students make progress, and are now obsessed with unlocking body awareness and motor-learning.

  • We are horse trainers and professional riders who believe in prevention over band-aids, and that developing somatic integration is essential for both horse and human sides of the partnership.

  • We are somatic educators who are driven to help people, horses and dogs get out of pain and back to enjoying their life's passions.

  • We are hoofcare professionals who didn't accept that pain and chronic injury were the only future for us, and learned how to create a sustainable career for ourselves.

  • We are horsewomen (and men) who value collaboration over competition, for the good of the horse...

We know that we've chosen a challenging path, and that being on the leading edge of a Paradigm Shift isn't always going to be easy - but we're doing it anyways, because we found something that gives us the answers we've been looking for, the invitation to step into our potential, and the tools to BE the CHANGE we want to see in the world.

Together, we’re breaking free from the myth that you have to teach the nervous system how to do it's job, or choose between being an ethical horse-mom and a successful equine professional.

Your happier horse is waiting for you...

The History of Hanna Somatic Education®

(aka HANNA SOMATICS)

Thomas Hanna, Ph.D. (1928-1990), was a philosopher who became a Functional Integration practitioner, and later developed Hanna Somatic Education® or Hanna Somatics. Thomas Hanna created the word "somatics" in 1976 to name the approaches to mind/body integration, and his new magazine, Somatics Magazine-Journal of the Mind/Body Arts and Sciences, which published its premier issue in Autumn 1977. Since its inception, the field of Somatics has grown by leaps and bounds, both in the number and variety of somatic disciplines, as well as the increased awareness and appreciation for working with the mind/body as a somatic whole by the general public. (from the Novato Institute)

Eleanor Criswell Ed.D. (1938-2024) co-founded the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training in 1975 with her husband Thomas Hanna, and is the creator of Somatic Yoga. As the Owner/Director of the Novato Institute from 1990-2024, Dr. Criswell developed the Hanna Somatic Education® (HSE) Professional Training curriculum, codified protocols and HSE certification program in collaboration with Phil Shenk, Susan Koenig and ____. In 1995 Dr. Criswell adapted the principles and application of HSE for working with animals, creating Equine Hanna Somatics®(EHS) and Canine Hanna Somatics®(CHS). In 2006, Dr. Criswell began training and certifying practitioners in working somatically with horses and dogs via the Equine Hanna Somatics Professional Training Program.

Alissa Mayer BSc(Equine) C-EHSE became certified as an EHS Educator in 2012, and spent the next 12 years as an apprentice and business partner with Dr. Criswell, co-teaching and co-developing the EHS Education curriculum, program and materials alongside Criswell beginning in 2013, and since 2024 inheriting the EHS and CHS trademarks and continuing Eleanor's legacy as Director of the EHS Education Program.

EHS Scope of Practice

This scope of practice is based upon the theoretical and applied principles of Hanna Somatic Education and Equine Hanna Somatics Education as they were taught under the auspices of Eleanor Criswell and the Novato Institute for Somatic Research & Training.

Equine Hanna Somatics Educators provide verbal or hands-on somatic education services for individual clients or groups in order to improve the central integration of the execution of their sensory-motor activities.

This may include but not necessarily be limited to endeavoring to:

• Apply the EHS specific clinical processes of "means-whereby", "kinetic mirroring" and "voluntary pandiculation" during their sessions and classes.

• Educate and train individuals or groups in self-performed motor skill improvement processes, i.e. Somatic Exercises and Explorations, with their own body or hands-on with their own horse(s).

• Disseminate educational materials to the public, including, but not limited to EHS Exercises and related somatic arts, sciences, philosophy and principles through lectures, seminars, training programs IF specifically licensed as a trainer by Eleanor Criswell or Alissa Mayer, conventions, publications, audio or video materials, or otherwise.

• Develop, encourage and/or provide public benefit classes and instruction in somatic movement, relaxation, re-education forms and in somatic principles.

• Generally promote and develop somatic movement arts, science, philosophy and principles.

Equine Hanna Somatics Education does NOT include:

• psycho- or physical therapy

• bodywork

• massage therapy

• diagnosis of medical conditions

• prescription of medications

Our Practitioners

Certified Equine Hanna Somatics® Educators (C-EHSEs) have completed extensive training with Eleanor Criswell Ed.D and/or Alissa Mayer BSc(Equine) C-EHSE at the Novato Institute from 2006-2024, or with Alissa Mayer and Ryan Moschell LMT CHSE from 2024-present.

Equine Hanna Somatics is NOT bodywork, but is a movement-based training method that helps horses access the part of their brains that regulate chronic muscular tension. By inviting horses to voluntarily participate in EHS movements, we facilitate the horse in resetting their own resting muscle tone. We truly work WITH, not ON, horses.

Our Online Practitioner Directory includes both certified and student practitioners who have completed 1, 2 or all 3 training modules of the certification program, and who are already out serving the horses of the world, or completing their self-study practicum requirements.

EHSEs who are also members of our professional association (the AEHSE) are indicated by a star below their name in the directory, and may include the appropriate membership badge on their website, social media profiles and marketing materials.

Our practitioners come from varied and fascinating backgrounds in both the human and equine training, movement, healing and bodywork fields. They use the unique technique of Voluntary Pandiculation, combined with knowledge of anatomy, neuro-muscular physiology, somatic horse handling and an understanding of natural healthy movement and biomechanics to help their clients rapidly achieve the highest levels of brain-body integration, homeostasis and profoundly deep horse-human bonding experiences.

Membership in our Professional Association

All enrolled students and graduates are eligible to join our professional association, the Association for Equine Hanna Somatics Education (AEHSE).

Membership in the AEHSE means you are committed to continuing education and staying connected to the source of EHS, current industry trends and the natural evolution and development of this emerging field.

EHS Code of Ethics

Adherence to this Code is a prerequisite for admission to the Equine Hanna Somatics® Professional Training Program, as well as for admission and continued membership in our professional association, the AEHSE.

This code of ethics provides governance for three main domains of concern:

First, it specifies professional standards which allow for the proper discharge of Equine Hanna Somatics Educators' responsibilities to the clients they are serving; Secondly, it protects the integrity of Equine Hanna Somatics® Education (EHS) and the professionally certified EHS Education Practitioners; and Finally, it safeguards the interests and persons of the clients under the care of Equine Hanna Somatics® Education practitioners.

All Certified Equine Hanna Somatics Practitioners, Licensed Teachers of EHS, or Equine Practitioners-in-Training practicing under the limitations imposed upon pre-certified students of EHS, agree to:

• Hold a sincere commitment to providing the highest quality of care to all equines and persons who seek out their professional services.

• Accurately represent professional qualifications, including education and professional affiliations, and provide only those services which they qualified to perform by training and experience.

• Inform the general public, clients, and other health care practitioners accurately about the scope and limitations of EHS practices.

• Acknowledge the limitations of and contraindications to the application of EHS practices, and refer clients to appropriate health professionals as needed.

• Provide EHS only when there is a reasonable expectation that it will be advantageous to the client.

• Maintain and improve professional certifications, knowledge, and skills through ongoing assessment of professional strengths and weaknesses, and through continued education and training.

• Observe honesty and integrity in conducting all business and professional activities, and refuse to unjustly discriminate against clients or other ethical health professionals.

• Safeguard the confidentiality of all client information unless disclosure is authorized by the client, required by law or court order, or absolutely necessary for the protection of the public at large.

• Respect the client's right to receive care with informed and voluntary consent. The consent may be either written, verbal or non-verbal and will be obtained before providing any EHS education.

• Honor the client's right to refuse, request modification of, or terminate a session regardless of prior consent given.

• Ensure the safety, comfort, and privacy of all clients in their provision of care.

• Exercise their right to refuse to work with an equine/person or part of the body for reasonable cause.

• Refrain, under any circumstances, from initiating or engaging in any sexual conduct, activities, or sexualizing behavior involving a client, even if the client attempts to sexualize the relationship.

• Avoid any influences, activities or interests which might conflict with their obligation to always act in the best interests of their clients or profession.

• Clearly identify and give credit to ideas, techniques, and principles derived from other people, disciplines and methods within the field when teaching or sharing them, particularly in regards to written publications, dissertation research and training program curricula that integrate different methods of somatic movement education.

• Respect existing publishing rights, intellectual property and copyright laws, both nationally and internationally.

• Obey all applicable local, regional and national laws, including obtaining and maintaining business licensing and professional registration required by the nation, state, province, or local jurisdiction in which they practice;

EHS Research and Development Principles

The cornerstone of science is the systematic, transparent pursuit of truth. The pursuit of truth in the field of equine wellbeing and enhancement is what drives us at Equine Hanna Somatics Education.

While our understanding of the field adapts as better techniques and new data is discovered, the principles with which we conduct our EHS practice and program development do not.

We publish these principles with the following goals in mind: to plant a flag and define a new standard of public accountability, to continue to earn your trust, and to build the foundation of an intrepid institution that will continue to do important work for many generations.

Safety & Regulations

Our first priority is to ensure the safety of all humans and animals who participate in our programs: we emphasizes supportive biomechanics and horse handling practices for our practitioners, consent and active participation from the clients, with clear indications and contraindications for participation this work.

Transparency & Crediting Sources

No gurus or gatekeeping. We always state the exact techniques we use, where they were developed and/or evolved from, and backed by science from 3rd party references (no proprietary anatomy or physiology texts) to validate that we are working with the scientific community and not method-specific psuedoscience.

Active Research

We contribute to the body of scientific knowledge by undertaking in-house research and collaborating with external research institutions (coming soon!). We share and/or publish all notable results of studies that concern our programs or the techniques and methods we use.

Driven by Truth, not Tradition.

Science is constantly evolving, and all models - while useful - are flawed. We are open to re-imagining how we teach the science of the WHY behind Hanna Somatics and how our recommended protocols affect the nervous system as new data emerges. This means adding or removing references or resources, updating our educational content, modifying the way we describe our programs, etc.

Subjective and Experiential Measurement.

As our understanding of neuroscience and health continues to grow, the consistent results achieved by both professionals and students of EHS speak for themselves, and consistently reveal the truth... We are forthcoming with protocols to test and measure the efficacy of Hanna Somatic Education across species and on an individual basis. A clinical trial on a cohort of humans, even when showing statistical significance, does not guarantee the same results for each specific individual.
